How to Stay Focused and Positive When You Haven’t Seen the Results Yet

Whoa, it is not pretty. Doing that ‘next level’ leap can often make you feel like stuff is falling apart! Here you are sailing along, seeing the new vision for your business, being on track to make the jump…and then the ‘shite hits the fan.’

You know what I’m talking about.

Money that had been flowing freely dries up.

Clients who were a yes are suddenly backing down.

“Life” happens and takes you out of the game for a while.

I want to talk about this phenomenon because WE ALL GO THROUGH IT! And it’s in how you handle it that will allow you to be with ease and grace and serenity, versus white- knuckling through the fear and spiraling into doubt.

First, let me articulate a bit what I call a “Next Level” problem, because if you don’t understand what it is, you can think you are:

  1. Failing
  2. Crazy
  3. Going backward
  4. On the wrong path
  5. Losing your faith

I have often said that the work to becoming a successful, happy, money-making entrepreneur isn’t in learning what to do, the real work is in who you have to become along the journey.  (Tweet this!)

In fact, this is why I refer to the entrepreneurial path as a spiritual journey. Nothing like a bit of business failure or a project tanking to bring you to your knees! You also must find in you strengths that you never knew existed. And that also means you must release the old, limiting beliefs or parts of yourself that are hiding out playing small and keeping you safe.

It’s my idea that when we are ready to jump to that next level, the ‘stuff’ that we have dealt with has to be released. As an example, you getting to a $50k biz used one level of skill and strengths. But those will not take you to a multiple six figure business. No, releasing the old and allowing for the new to emerge is the way to get to the next level.

But it looks crazy-messy when this process happens!

I’ll share a personal story to illustrate it that happened to me last year.

I had just finished a VIP retreat in Sedona with my coach. This one was a S-t-r-e-t-c-h in that I’d gone through the breakup of my relationship, felt physically like crap, and truthfully didn’t even know how I was going to have the emotional bandwidth to get the most out of my time.

So, yeah…Spunkycoach was feeling anything but! Super Vulnerable, raw, and in an emotionally exhausted place. Somehow though, in spite of all this I SHOWED UP. (Teaching point – Show up in spite of how you feel because something good is ready to emerge, especially if it feels crappy.)

In the VIP day we planned my October 2013 retreat and mapped out the strategy to get that much larger and more profitable business that is desiring to come through me. That’s the tangible ‘outer game’ kinda stuff.

But what else happened sorta freaked me out…in a good way. On the mountain top high above the city I did a piece of release work and then ‘welcomed’ in what seemed like a Divine “download” like I had never experienced before. It was an energetic shift where I KNEW in my bones that I was to step up, play so much bigger, and serve more people. Super clear. Super powerful. A reverent moment.

I felt high and amazing and totally on purpose. Absolutely no doubt about what I am supposed to do.

Until I got home and a major thing that I had counted on didn’t work.

See, I had envisioned the retreat as taking place at a site in Scottsdale. The venue I had chosen was a beautiful center that was 20 minutes from my house, and 20 minutes from the airport so those flying in would have an easy time getting there. Everything was all set. The dates were booked, room booked, speakers booked.

Then it fell apart because for whatever reason…. I couldn’t get the place.

And I lost it. All the faith I had. The knowing, the ease, the flow. Gone.

Like ‘wrecked-my-weekend’ kinda gone. The contrast between the “VIP” me and this me was striking!

By Monday I was on the phone with my mastermind group (where I was a client) crying about things not working.

I was SURE it was supposed to be at that venue. After all, I had had the vision and everything worked out smoothly at first. Until the booking fell through.

Here I had been high and clear and focused and unstoppable and now I was feeling the overwhelm that comes when you set your dreams higher than ever, pick a huge goal, and then have to BECOME the person capable of reaching the goal.

My mastermind group was supportive. They gave me some loving butt kicking that perhaps I was just a little too attached to how it had to be in my mind.

“This or something better is what you need to be saying about finding a venue, Therese.”

In my head I was fighting their suggestion because in my area there are only 2 retreat centers and the other one kinda sucks! What seemed like the only choice had fallen through.

So I did what I normally do. I got resourceful. “Make shit happen” is what I like to say. I pushed. I asked. I went outside my comfort zone trying to solve the problem that would have allowed me to get the perfect venue booked. (Teaching point – there is a place where you have to be willing to do what you haven’t been willing to do before.)

Still nothing. Feeling pretty hopeless and wondering what the heck happened to my vision of the retreat being at a fabulous center…

Until the still, small voice told me to do some research and look online.

Then I found it. The venue. It was The Sedona Mago Retreat Center.

I’m an AZ Native, have been to Sedona a hundred times, and yet never knew the place existed.

I called. They were awesome. The dates worked. I got my retreat booked there.

And all the people I was ‘caretaking’ by being worried that they’d have to spend two more hours getting up to Sedona were actually MORE excited that they GOT to be in Sedona.

Jeez. Huge lessons here… (Teaching point – often we are so busy trying to make it ‘right’ for everyone, that we complicate things.) Tweet this!

After the fact of wasting so much mental energy on fear and worry and pushing and doubt, here’s what I discovered…

It always does!

Yet, since I had set up the huge-stretch-goal for my retreat and business revenue, I got to face the parts of me that don’t always trust that. The parts that hold too tightly instead of surrendering to ‘this or something better.’

I saw how much mental energy I wasted because I could not just know that the perfect place was on its way.

That for me is the next level problem. In order to become the person who could easily fill a retreat or create a multiple six figure business I had to stop the crazy habit of attachment/struggle cycle.

So in essence the work I did in Sedona set up the situation for me to recognize old patterns that need to be released.

Now let’s look at your life and biz. Where is this showing up for you?

Often it’s in the “in-between time.”

You’ve done all the marketing and made great contacts, but nothing is panning out yet. Maybe the money isn’t flowing or the place you thought you’d be hasn’t arrived yet. That is the exact place to create a new experience for yourself.

Most of my clients go to fear and scarcity and lack. Which means they get more of guess what…yeah, fear, scarcity and lack.

The work I do is to help them align with the truth that the money is there!

If the desire is in you, the money is there as well.

If this is happening to you, here are 3 things you can do to keep your energy higher.

  1. Count your blessings. Seriously. Look around you and see ALL THE ABUNDANCE in your life. Measure way more than just cash and you’ll shift your energy to one of being full.
  2. Keep focused on the desire. Stop looking at the lack. Stop talking about how hard it is and how you never get a break. STOP. ONLY talk about what you want and how it’s going to feel when it arrives.
  3. Surround yourself with people who will remind you why you are on the path. Do not allow the dream stealers to give you the ‘why-don’t-you-just-get-a-job’ talk. Have someone in your life that is believing for you that it’s possible, doable, and absolutely yours to do and have.

And the biggest thing to move through this ‘next level’ problem is to understand the context! Bless it. Know that this is a sign that better things are happening and you are pushing through.

I celebrate you! I am here to support you! You CAN DO IT!

Much love,
