We all want financial ease and freedom.
And while that can be a wonderful motivator, it can also be a ‘soul-crushing, dream-stealing’ kick in the head!
Here’s why…. On the journey to becoming a successful and money-making business owner, you will have times that things don’t work. Times when plans go awry, people leave, or money dries up for a while.
And if you only base your worth and value, or measure your success by your bank account…you are screwed!
Having been in the game for long enough to see the trends and experiencing my own ups and downs, I know that often who you have to become to bring in the money and create the business success IS the work! Every single money making entrepreneur I know has had losses….from bankruptcy, health issues, family challenges, and other things that they have had to deal with.
So what do you do in those times when the money is not where you want it?
Measure something else!!
If money is the goal, then there a very black/white, have/have not, success/fail way of being with it. It leads to only one conclusion. Bank account full = you are a success! Bank account diminishing = you suck!
Now that’s clearly not what I believe, but many of my clients fall into this trap.
And to that I say… Measure something else!
It all comes down to YOU being able to determine what success means. In 2012 I had two ‘success points’ that for me were very noteworthy. The first half of the year I was hitting the big $ numbers….having 5-figure months, a 5-figure launch, lots of speaking and traveling, etc. So I was constantly focused on bringing in the money and doing whatever it took to keep it going. This I considered success #1.
And then success #2 came in the second half of the year. That was that when I realized how burned out I was and how much stress it caused to keep ‘feeding the beast’ of the business I built. My great success here was that I allowed myself to slow down and totally change gears.
That meant cancelling a couple of launches, taking time AWAY from biz, learning to run my business from inspiration versus perspiration, and living much more ‘life.’ In fact, in the 2nd half of the year not only did I attract a relationship, but I got to be of more service to my church/community, help my ex through a bypass surgery, spend more time with my kids, and have more time to do what I wanted. But I made less money.
So does that mean I failed? If I was only measuring the profit/loss statements, it would be clear cut. The numbers were down a little bit. But the quality of my LIFE was greatly increased.
And what happened as a result of allowing myself to take the time away, reevaluate and get clear on what my values and priorities were…. Money started flowing in easier, with less effort, and with much more ease! In fact, the first 60 days of this 2013 I sold more than I used to sell in a whole year back in the day! I’m telling you this not to brag but to show you that when you take the time to measure what you determine gives you life and brings you happiness, and focus on that….money will follow!
Our striving and endlessly pursuing money is the thing that is costing us time, energy, and ultimately money. It’s a crazy, viscous cycle. Money dries up, so we get scared. We constrict. We start looking at what’s wrong or not working. So we push. We freak out. We get in fear. We entertain doubt.
And then money is sitting on the sidelines thinking, “There’s no way in hell I’m coming to see you….you are nuts!” Okay maybe money doesn’t say it exactly like that, but you get the drift. Understanding that you need to be a vibrational match to that which you desire, you can see that if you are in that spin, you will only be attracting more lack.
Wanna shift it? Like I said before…. Measure something else! One of my clients was recently complaining that he wasn’t able to generate the results he wanted right now. He was stuck in the above cycle. So I gave him the spiel.
What else can you measure? Where can you feel successful? Look at the rest of your life…. Are you showing up more fully with those you love? Serving your community? Allowing for personal growth? Passionate about a cause? Pursing a hobby you love?
My instruction was simple. Find something you ARE succeeding in, and put your focus there. (Tweet this!) The appearance of lack in your bank account is just that. An appearance. YOU get to determine what you call success.
If you just measure the richness of life or all the blessings you have, you will be in that energy. (Tweet this!)Then money will be watching you saying, ‘Hey, you seem pretty content and happy over them…I think I wanna go hang out with you.” That’s the trick.
Measure the intangible things that you are very likely overlooking. Make a list of 20. Do it now and watch your mood and energy shift. And feel free to send me your new list! I’d love to hold that success vision with you.
